New Horse Crossing Signs for Drivers

As a regular darter at the Industrial Park, Steve Paige noticed a couple of areas where wild horses were drinking from deep ditches unseen by passing drivers. Aware of the driver safety issue this causes when horses pop up onto the roadway to leave, he reached out for help to get horse crossing warning signs installed in these areas.

A big thank you goes out to Kris Thompson, Tahoe Reno Industrial Center, Storey County Public Works Director Jason Wierzbicki, and Steve and American Wild Horse Campaign for working on this. Storey County granted this request and new solar powered flashing warning signs are in place!

Meet the fillies up for adoption that will steal your heart!

Wild Horse Connection has some wonderful young fillies up for adoption!

Hazel (DOB 3/19/21), Bitsy (DOB 5/19/21) and Koa (6/12/21) are fillies all born this year and rescued from the range as orphans separated from their dams at a very young age. They are thriving and growing and so much fun! They are all looking for their loving forever homes. The girls are basic halter trained and have all had their feet trimmed a couple of times. They are young, so still learning to be horses without too much pressure yet. They love to be groomed and are curious about everything and love people.

Ongoing Fencing for Safety

Wild Horse Connection volunteers have been busy donning their gloves and repairing fencing all over East and South Reno. From Hidden Valley to Damonte Ranch to Steamboat Valley, holes in fencing (caused by aging, weather, cuts, wear and tear) have been repaired and new fencing installed in some areas. In addition, a lot of falling down, old, rusty barbed wire has been removed in an area that was creating a hazard for horses walking through it.

Fencing for public safety works, but like anything, requires maintenance. Kudos to these volunteers who readily step up and get to work, and continue to do so!

Highs and Lows from LBL Equine Rescue

This past month has encompassed some major highs and major lows. 

Most excitingly, an anonymous donation of $1,000 was received, thank you so much! Every penny makes a difference for these deserving horses!

Then, we sadly said our farewells to Luna, who was suffering from ulcers and possible cancer, and Tess, who came back to us with severe laminitis. These decisions are never made lightly but knowing quality of life had diminished and would not improve, we chose to relieve their suffering. We respect our Vets and consult with them prior to making these tough decisions which always leave a hole in our hearts. Run free over the Rainbow Bridge sweet ladies.

More Fencing!

VRWPA funded and organized a fencing project along a portion of Eastlake Blvd where horses were crossing but not immediately able to get through the other side so found themselves stuck on the roadway. The new fencing and gates should help minimize horses caught on the roadway with no way to exit safely and improve driver safety. VRWPA encourages everyone to remember to close gates for public safety.
