March Happy Tails Rescue

Foal Rescue Class

LRTC’s Technical Large Animal Rescue (TLAR) team was on hand to respond to a variety of calls in February, including another relocation of a band that had moved into a busy traffic neighborhood in South Reno to a safer location on the range.

They also held an Emergency Horse & Livestock Handling class (the first of two required classes to become fully certified in Technical Large Animal Rescue) and held a class specifically on Foal Rescue for both LRTC’s TLAR volunteer responders and Wild Horse Connection volunteers. Volunteers learned assessment, safe handling practices, when intervention is necessary, use of the Air for Paws units to deliver supportive oxygen, and more.

The goal is to always leave horses, foals included, on the range and wild whenever possible. But when a rescue needs to happen, there are special considerations for these little ones who can crash so quickly, and team members are ready for the upcoming foaling season!

Speaking of foal rescue, the American Wild Horse Campaign once again received a generous grant from a private foundation for the Virginia Range Foal Rescue Fund. In addition to providing funds for vet care, critical care, transport and stocking the existing foal rescue kits, the grant will fund the creation of two additional Foal Kits for 2021. This will increase supply coverage on the range and expand foal rescue capabilities!
