AWHC’s 2-Year Anniversary
The American Wild Horse Campaign’s fertility control program on Nevada’s Virginia Range just celebrated its 2-year birthday in April!! Volunteers are continuing to treat mares and fillies daily with birth control.
Volunteers and staff are seeing foals being born this foaling season but so far we are seeing 62% fewer foals than last year at this time. We expect this trend to continue to show fewer foals as AWHC volunteers are in the field getting the job done!
New Darting Class
AWHC’s next darting certification class is already all filled up! The class has not been scheduled yet, but we are waiting for the Science & Conservation Center to let us know when it can schedule an off-site class right here in Northern Nevada!
As always, the Virginia Range program is a success due to the amazing community of people and groups working so hard to protect and preserve the VR horses. As such, many of the volunteers who have signed up for AWHC’s next darting class already volunteer in a different capacity on the VR! Many donate their time to LBL Equine Sanctuary, Least Resistance Training Concepts’ Technical Large Animal Rescue Team, Wild Horse Connection, Wild Horse Preservation League, and Virginia Range Wildlife Protection Association. Some have been volunteers for American Wild Horse Campaign as documenters and spotters. AWHC’s hope is that they are all trained and in the field darting before the end of summer! We can’t wait to welcome them to the darting team!
