Fertility Control Update

Numbers Update

As of July 31, 2022:

Total Mares Treated: 1,767
Total Primers: 1,898
Total Boosters: 4,334

American Wild Horse Campaign released the Year 3 Report for the Virginia Range fertility control program last month. The program continues to show success! Range-wide the number of foals born shows a 61.4% decrease from January through June 2022, over the same time period in 2020. This time period encompasses the peak of foaling season.

The fertility control team members deserve a lot of credit for their diligent work. They drive and hike the range, dart, consider each mare’s darting record, photograph and choose the photos to best help the team identify the horses when they see them. It’s remarkable what a team of caring individuals can do when they come together to make a positive impact and keep our Virginia Range horses living free on the range.

Year 4 is underway and the team continues to grow and show their dedication. If you have an opportunity, thank a volunteer!
